Voltron: Legendary Defender is one of the best modern cartoons on air, with its plot being able to draw in both younger and older audiences. The show has also been incorporating characters and plot points from the original show, while still adding a new creative spin on it. Well after seasons three and four came out in rapid succession, we had a longer wait for season five. So, did that extra time end up with an even better season?

Story

Season five has the team split on the issue of whether or not to trust Lotor, who saved everybody at the end of season four. However, Lotor has been giving the team correct info on Galra bases to attack. But after the team gets the news that Zarkon wants to trade and has Pidge’s father, the discussion become even more intense.

Presentation

Season five is visually one of the best seasons we’ve had so far. It travels to different places than the show has ever been before, which is good, as most seasons stick to the same few planets. A different side of the Galra is shown this season, from different to designs to lots of different environments.

Final Thoughts

Season five was a mixed bag for episodes, as it produced some of the best ones in the entire series. However, it also had a few episodes that were fine, but you can’t deal with fine on a six episode season. This is in addition to a major death that was very downplayed, plot threads that weren’t picked up from season four, and not seeing Keith for half of the entire season. But, one of the best parts of this season was how it both tied up loose ends and set up next season, which will release on June 15th.

8/10
