Voltron Legendary Defender is one of Netflix’s most successful exclusive shows. So, in response to this popularity the shows has been releasing seasons with less episodes, but less wait between seasons. Season 3 was released on August 4th, and Season 4 was released yesterday on Friday the 13th. So, does the short wait time between seasons create a decrease in quality, or does the focus on smaller seasons allow for more interconnected stories?

Story

Season 4 takes place very close to season 3, but we don’t know the amount of time. It starts with Keith working alongside the Blade of Marmora. After dealing with the team, Keith leaves Voltron to work with the Blade. Shiro then pilots the Black Lion again, which makes it so Keith is hardly in the show. The season feels off because of the change, and it doesn’t get resolved even at the end of the series.

Presentation

Voltron’s animation is great, and still looks smooth. However, the show uses 3D graphics for the ships and Voltron. Season 4 mixes the 2D and 3D styles much more than previously, which helps to mix the boundaries, and helps the 3D animation not stick out like in earlier seasons. The fights in space also benefit from this, as it isn’t jarring to see the two different animation styles.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this was a good season. However, it wasn’t without flaws, and I believe they were larger than the previous season. There were only six episodes in the season, which isn’t necessarily bad, but episode 4, The Voltron Show! didn’t fit with the other five episodes, and felt like filler, which you can’t have in a six episode season. The season also returned Shiro to the Black Lion, and had Keith barely involved in any episodes. This was a really jarring move, and made last season feel very inconsequential. However some great things happened, like Pidge finding Matt, Zarkon returning to the throne, or Lotor becoming an enemy of the Galra. Season 4 could have been worse, but it could have definitely been better.

7.5/10
