Steven Universe is back with four new episodes, and more to come very soon. After what we’ve learned in the past few episodes, especially regarding Pink Diamond. So, how good are these returning episodes?

Story (SPOILERS)

The episode starts with Lars and crew flying through space, with their thrusters being broken and the power having shut off. Steven decides to bring Garnet over to see the Off Colors. However, the discussion soon turns to Rose Quartz, and Garnet decides to fully inform everyone on Rose Quartz.

Rose Quartz was a normal gem, but she soon fell in love with Earth. She asked her fellow gems to look around, and when confronted by Pink Diamond, asked that they leave the planet. After being denied, Rose began to fight, and gained the support of many fellow gems. But after Rose’s forces started to fall against the Diamonds, so Rose took to the final measure, and shattered Pink Diamond. In retaliation, the rest of the Diamonds launched an attack that corrupted all but Rose and a few of her friends.

After the story ends, Garnet gives a rousing speech to inspire the Off Colors. This has them all work on the engines, which start to work, but aren’t strong enough to get the group back to Earth. Steven then talks to Garnet about the Pink Diamond dream he had in Jungle Moon, but she says it’s nothing to worry about.

Presentation

This episode has two types of graphics, the normal style with Steven and the Off Colors, and one when Garnet is telling the story. This has the characters as silhouettes, with certain characteristics being colored to show who they are, such as Rose’s hair and outfit. This creates a very unique minimalistic style that hasn’t been seen in the show before.

Final Thoughts

This is a good episode to start the series back with, as it ties up lots of loose plot threads that have been hanging around during the series. While the backstory of Rose was something most people had speculated on, but it’s good to finally get full confirmation. It’s also great to see the Off Colors again, and learn that they’re slowly but surely getting closer to Earth.

7.3/10
