Steven Universe “What’s Your Problem?” Review
After Sapphire left Ruby last episode, she needed to learn the truth behind Rose Quartz. Once she saw the error of her ways, she came back to the temple to find Ruby, but she was already gone. So, how will Sapphire find Ruby and make up with her?
Story (SPOILERS)
Sapphire finds Ruby’s letter about having to be on her own, which causes Sapphire to start crying. Pearl starts crying as well when she realizes that there will be no Garnet if Ruby doesn’t come back. Steven and Amethyst go out to find Ruby, and while Amethyst tries to joke around, Steven is serious about finding Ruby. Amethyst and Steven go and stop for pizza, where the discuss the recent revelations. Amethyst gets mad, under the guise of caring for Steven. Amethyst shows that she doesn’t want to deal with this, because it’s not her problem. After learning where Ruby is, they both go, but Amethyst tries to escape Steven, who just wants to help Amethyst with her feelings. Amethyst ends up revealing that she thinks none of the gems are responsible for Rose, and that they should look towards the future, rather than get caught up in the past. And after a brief conversation, the episode ends with Steven and Amethyst flying up to Ruby.
Presentation
This episode had Steven and Amethyst exploring many well known locations, but with a much different attitude than normal. And when Amethyst finally shows her maturity, it’s on the beach where she felt worthless seeing Stevonnie beat Jasper. That scene shows how far she’s come since the beginning of the series.
Final Thoughts
Amidst the major plot reveals and Garnet splitting that has been shown through these past episodes, seeing an episode on the character least involved with the conflict shows a new outsider perspective on these events. Seeing Amethyst having grown so much from the beginning of the series, so much so that she’s the most calm and collected after this revelation, shows that she has become comfortable with who she is, as well as her place within the Crystal Gems.
