Steven Universe “Three Gems and a Baby” Review
One main theme in Steven Universe is how Rose Quartz turned into Steven, but we’ve never really seen how everybody reacted until now. Three Gems and a Baby is an episode that really ties together main story points and interactions from the entire series.
Story
A blizzard has hit Beach City, so Steven, Greg, and the gems are trapped in the house. To entertain Steven, Greg tells him a story about the last time a blizzard came, when Steven was a baby!
Greg was staying at Vidalia’s house because she was out of town, and he was having a hard time taking care of baby Steven, but still enjoying it. One day the gems come over, and bring gifts for Steven. They’re all very uncomfortable though, as they still haven’t gotten over Rose being gone. The gems start thinking Rose is trapped after Steven’s gem glows, so they kidnap him to try to get Rose back.
All of the gems try their different ideas of how to get her back, but none work. Amethyst thinks it’s shapeshifting, which makes Steven laugh. Garnet thinks it’s fusion, so she unfuses to tell Rose it’s ok to unfuses but Steven gets sad because he doesn’t see Garnet anymore. Pearl kicks it up 20 notches and is about to pull Rose’s gem out of Steven, but thankfully comes to her senses before she does it. The gems meet back up with Greg, and they all know that they know nothing about Steven, so they decide that they have to work together on raising Steven.
Animation
The animation is great in this episode, and it’s fun seeing some older and different designs. We see some designs similar to the beginning of the show, and we also get to see Ruby and Sapphire’s design prior to reforming in Jailbreak. Baby Steven is also really adorable, and quite funny.
Final Thoughts
Three Gems and a Baby was a great flashback episode, and really showed how everyone reacted when Rose changed into Steven, and also why everyone was acting how they were to each other in the beginning of the series.
