Steven Universe “The Question” Review
The past few episodes have dealt with seeing characters react to the reveal that Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond. We’ve seen Steven, Pearl, Sapphire, and Amethyst, and only one Crystal Gem remains, Ruby. Ruby has shown to be very temperamental before, but she seemed relatively calm when she actually heard the news. So, will Steven be able to help Ruby make up with Sapphire?
Story (SPOILERS)
Steven heads up to talk to Ruby, who seems surprisingly came and happy after she and Sapphire split. This is because Ruby is finally doing things on her own, as she was always listening to orders with Homeworld, and then was always with Sapphire as Garnet. Steven is concerned about this, and wants to get Ruby back with Sapphire, but Ruby isn’t budging. Ruby then decides she wants to live like a cowboy, not needing anything from anybody. Ruby then starts exploring, and even when she almost falls down a ravine, she excited that she did it on her own. Later that night Steven talks to Ruby about how he’s glad that she’s happy, but she reveals that she’s missed Sapphire the whole time, even though she was having fun. Ruby wants to be with Sapphire, but she wants to make that choice, rather than being told to be together. Steven and Ruby go back to the house, where Ruby proposes to Sapphire. Sapphire says yes, and the two are glad to be back with each other.
Presentation
This episode focuses on Ruby being on her own, and has Ruby acting like a loner cowboy as a visual representation of that. This episode also featured a Ruby song, and it was in the style of western songs, with a little bit of yodeling thrown in too. While it wasn’t the best song, it was a good representation, both lyrically and style wise, to show how Ruby was feeling.
Final Thoughts
Ruby was the final character to react to the Pink Diamond reveal, and hers directly affects what will happen next in the story. Ruby’s realized that she can be Garnet and still be able to do things on her own, so she decided to propose to Sapphire. This will help give the not often seen Ruby and Sapphire some real character development, while still having a good reason to bring Garnet back.
