Directly following “The New Crystal Gems” Connie and Steven go back to his house. When Connie leaves with her mom, Steven feeling bad. Will he struggle through, or try to finally get answers?

Story

As previously said, Steven got upset when he didn’t have a mom like Connie, so he goes into Rose’s room to see her. When he finally meets her, Rose and Steven do things that a normal mother and son would do, like play football or video games. After a while they just begin to talk, which is a truly touching scene, Steven just being able to talk to someone who understands him.

Steven eventually realizes that this is just how he wants Rose to be and starts to blame her for all of his problems. Steven even goes far enough to say that Rose only had Steven to get away from her problems. Rose does respond, in a caring and polite fashion, that she meant everything that she said in the video tape at the beginning of the series.

Animation

The animation of this episode was great. Lots of lovely pastels colors and shades of pink, and a great mix of dark colors towards the end. The animation used to bring Steven and Rose together is great, and compliments Rose’s huge stature, and Steven’s much smaller size.

Final Thoughts

10/10

This is what Steven Universe embodies as a show. A relatable, beautiful, and enjoyable experience. This episode can personal to people who don’t have or don’t relate with their parent(s).

Pros

  • Animation
  • Rose and Steven interactions
  • The landscape
  • The character development
  • The relatability
  • The theme

Cons
