Ever since Blue Diamond was introduced in “The Answer,” she had been seen in a palanquin. When “Buddy’s Book” was released, we saw an illustration of a destroyed palanquin. The palanquin was a big hint of what was happening with Blue Diamond, but we never expected that the broken palanquin belonged to Pink Diamond. The palanquin of Pink Diamond is where Blue Diamond mourns her loss however. Now, where does that put Steven?

Story

Steven has been having weird dreams about being on hill surrounded by flowers and a broken, pink, palanquin. He tells this to Connie, who remembers a similar image from Buddy’s Book. When they find the image, Steven and Connie ask the gems about what it is. This leads to a heated discussion about how the gems don’t tell him information that he needs to know.

Steven turns to his dad to take him to the palanquin, which is in Korea. After getting a ride from Andy, and checking out the city, Greg and Steven start hiking up a familiar looking mountain.

When they get up there, they notice Blue Diamond and her Pearl mourning at the site of Pink Diamond’s Palanquin. When Blue Pearl hears a noise, Greg goes and talks to Blue Diamond about loss. This prompts Blue Diamond to take Greg away, not wanting him to be destroyed by the Cluster, which she thought was still active.

Garnet finds Steven on the hill, and Steven tells her about Blue Diamond taking Greg. They then decide to get him back.

Animation

The animation is great in this episode, but what really shines is Blue Diamond and Blue Pearl. While we’ve already seen Blue Pearl, this was the first time we saw or heard Blue Diamond.

Final Thoughts

8/10

While it felt like the episode was dragging at some points, it was a good start to the plethora of these five episodes that were all released.

Pros

  • Seeing Blue Diamond
  • Return of Andy
  • Good starting episode
  • Builds on character relationships

Cons

  • Pacing felt off
  • Not much actually happened
