Steven Universe “Sadie Killer” Review
After briefly seeing Sadie in “Dewey Wins”, it’s clear she’s very upset about Lars being gone. However, this episode selves even more into Sadie, and how she reacts even further on after Lars is gone, and how she copes.
Story (SPOILERS)
The episode starts with Steven going over to the Big Donut, and picking up a large order. When he’s there he sees Sadie is just miserable with having to be the only one working. It turns out these donuts are for the Cool Kids, as Steven is in a band with them, and they were going to play a concert soon. But, they didn’t have any songs. Steven invites Sadie to one of the practices, and she tries to get there after work. However, when she gets there, everyone is packing up. Seeing this, Steven decides to go practice at her house the next day. The group ends up watching a scary movie, and turns it into a song. Sadie becomes the lead singer, but has to turn down the concert, due to her work. However, at the end of the episode, she runs towards the group saying that she can join the band, because she quit her job at the Big Donut.
Presentation
While this episode goes back to Beach City, and doesn’t have any crazy extravagant locations, it does contain one of my favorite visual scenes from the show. It comes during the song Working Dead, and just looks great. It has Sadie slowly transforming to be more scary, as well as all the Cool Kids and Steven’s reactions. It also uses the VHS and creepy guys from the movie they were all watching to make a great sequence.
Final Thoughts
This is another good episode from this batch, and really helps complete Sadie’s character arc. She has a dark side, which we had seen evidence of in previous episodes, and she realizes that she hates her job. When she finally makes her decision at the end of the episode, it feels like it was a long time coming. The new song, Working Dead, whole not my favorite, is still a pretty good song, and for a cartoon like Steven Universe, that’s high praise.
