After dealing with both Connie and Lapis leaving him, Steven isn’t in the greatest state of mind. Seeing this, Greg and the gems decide to talk Steven on a vacation to help clear his mind. However, Steven doesn’t enjoy quite as much as everyone thought.

Story (SPOILERS)

Greg has noticed Steven constantly being on his phone and being upset, so he and the gems decide to take Steven on a vacation. Once they get to the house, each gem tries to cheer Steven up, but they all think it’s related to him being on Homeworld. After a talk with Pearl, Steven admits that Connie hasn’t been talking to him. Greg steps in to give some fatherly advice, and reveals that there’s no service at the vacation house, which causes Steven to freak out. After driving to the top of a cliff, Steven, Greg, and the gems all share a touching moment staring at the night sky.

Presentation

“Gemcation” presents another scenic change, this time to a house in the middle of the woods. However, the set piece isn’t used much, but does give off some nice visuals as we see it throughout the different times of the day.

Final Thoughts

This is the weakest of all the episodes, but by no means does it means that the episode is outright bad. It’s great seeing the Crystal Gems and Greg helping Steven through his trouble with Connie, but Steven feels whiny and annoying, which sucks because he’s the characters you follow throughout the episode. But by the end he gets back to his normal demeanor, and we get a nice seen of this crazy family just looking at the night sky. However, it doesn’t add to much to either the main story or the characters, as there isn’t any growth. We also get teased with information, but it gets shut down, an obvious jab at the fans always wanting to know more.

6.7/10
