Steven Universe “Dewey Wins” Review
Steven Universe has finally returned from its hiatus. This hiatus started on May 29th when Lars’ Head first aired. It has been 165 days since a new episode of the show has premiered, over a third of the year. However, Steven Universe has finally returned to the air with multiple episodes, even if it’s only on the Cartoon Network app. But, do these episodes show a triumphant return for the series?
Story (SPOILERS)
The episode starts with Steven walking Connie and Lion across the beach, with Connie upset with Steven. She is upset because he just abandoned her, throwing away all their training together. Both she and Lion leave Steven alone on the beach. Steven visits Sadie and tells her about Lars, freaking her out. After that, we see Nanefua running against Mayor Dewey in the mayoral election. Steven talks to Mayor Dewey about the race and gives a speech on how Mayor Dewey doesn’t get involved with the problems. However Dewey doesn’t remember Lars, prompting the city to get angry at him. Steven helped Dewey get ready for the big debate. After giving his speech about the mayor getting blamed for everything, Nanefua responds about taking more responsibility. This causes Mayor Dewey to pull out of the election, finally realizing that he isn’t the best choice for Mayor. This causes Steven to freak out, talking about how he abandoned all the work they did, and Steven finally understands how Connie felt.
Presentation
After having a multitude of episodes in space and on Homeworld, the aesthetics of Beach City feel refreshing and familiar. We also get to be around human characters who have been pushed to the side due to the very plot heavy episodes that have been the main focus as of late.
Final Thoughts
This is a good episode for Steven Universe to come back to. It shows how the past few episodes have effected the citizens of Beach City, as well as putting a strain on Steven and Connie’s relationship. This episode also completes Mayor Dewey’s character arc, realizing that being the Mayor just wasn’t the right job for him. The title of the episode is also a nice touch, referencing the Dewey defeats Truman newspaper misprint.
