Steven Universe “Adventures in Light Distortion” Review
This is the second of five episodes revolving around the rescue of Greg, and this is the worst of the five. The bulk of this episode is spent on visual gags such as deformity and trippy graphics. Although the pacing of “Steven’s Dream” felt off, the pacing of “Adventures in Light Distortion” feels irrelevant.
Story
Garnet and Steven go back to get Pearl and Amethyst after Greg was kidnapped. They figure he was taken to Pink Diamond’s Human Zoo, so they’ll need to travel there. Garnet decided to use the Roaming Eye that used to belong to the Rubies.
When in space, the estimated time is 70 years, so Steven decides to turn on the Gravity Engine, which sends the ship flying super fast, but messes with the physical forms of the gems.
When trying to change the gems shape back to normal, Steven makes the ship go faster than light, meaning the gems can’t maintain a physical form. However, Steven manages to stop the ship just before they reach the Human Zoo.
Animation
The animation is the same style as in “Steven’s Dream,” but as the Gravity Engine gets turned on, the gems take on many different looks, and the ending part of the episode also has some Evangelion levels trippy visuals.
Final Thoughts
7/10
Although it wasn’t a necessarily bad episode, it pales in comparison to even the previous episode, and doesn’t end up with a large feeling of accomplishment, even though the gems reached their goal.
Pros
- Run in with Lapis and Peridot
- Running into the Rubies
- Some humorous jokes
Cons
- Doesn’t feel like much happened
- Slow pacing
