Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion Review

Splatoon 2 was a great sequel to an already great game, but there were still some flaws. One of those flaws was a fairly lackluster single player campaign. However, Splatoon 2 just got DLC which added not only new story content, but many more challenges. So, did the DLC improve the single player, or was it more of the same?

Story

When you first start Octo Expansion, you wake up as an Octoling with amnesia in a subway system. After meeting up with some characters, you find out you have to do challenges to make your way to the “promised land.”

Presentation

Octo Expansion keeps the graphics of the core Splatoon 2 game, with one major exception, you play as an Octoling. It doesn’t change anything gameplay wise, but it’s a nice new character design. One major addition is tons of new music that are played during the missions. These songs are all great, with some being better than many featured on the original soundtrack.

Gameplay

While Octo Expansion uses the same controls as Splatoon 2, it uses these in challenges never before seen. Some involve breaking targets using certain weapons, others including moving an 8-Ball to a certain location, and others involve you defending orbs with certain stipulations. Either way, Octo Expansion presents interesting challenges, and often uses things you’re used to and flips them on their head during gameplay.

Final Thoughts

Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion is an example of DLC done perfectly. It adds additional, but not required, story segments, has new and difficult challenges, and gives rewards to be used in the main game. I fully completed Octo Expansion within a few days, but it barely felt like time had passed. The $20 price tag is definitely worth it for the amount of content you get, as well as additional gear for online play.

10/10
