My Thoughts on Nintendo’s E3 Day 1
Great. That is the one word I’d use to describe it. I didn’t get everything I wanted, which was a given, but some things felt left out. However, with the relatively mediocre reactions from Sony’s and Xbox’s conferences, Nintendo hit it out of the park. Let’s go through the games shown, and how it compared to my wishlist. The actual information is actually here.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - It looked great, it seemed to keep the elements from the previous games for combat. It was shown a lot in the Treehouse event, but I haven’t played any other games in the series, so I don’t have much to say on the topic.
Kirby Switch - A new Kirby game! These are always a joy to play, and this looks like the Wii game, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland. Kirby also has an ability to turn enemies into allies, and make fusion weapons, which looks really cool. I think it looks good, and it’s releasing 2018, and I hope early.
Pokken Tournament DX - We already new about it, and it’s a re-release of a Wii U game. It is a fun game, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. I’m gonna buy it, and I know I’m gonna have fun.
Game Freak told us that there is a main series Pokemon in development for the Switch. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Sinnoh Remakes.
Metroid Prime 4 - I’m so excited. I’ve never played a Prime game before, but that doesn’t matter. I am hyped. The most recent game was released in 2007. Metroid is coming back, but more on that later.
Yoshi Switch - Another Yoshi game in the style of Woolly World, and it looks fun. It has a somewhat similar gameplay feature to Super Paper Mario, where you flip the world, but in Yoshi Switch it goes completely around, bringing you to the other side. It looks fun, it has co-op, and it’s coming out in 2018, and that was all expected. When we see more, I’ll be more excited.
Fire Emblem Warriors - Like with Xenoblade, I don’t have much to say on this. It looks fun, but I don’t have a large reference, as I’ve only played Hyrule Warriors Legends. I’ll buy it, and probably have a good time, but I don’t have a large connection.
Skyrim - All that was shown was Link’s outfit, the Master Sword, and the Hylian Shield can be unlocked with the use of an Amiibo. Ok, nothing major about that.
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC - Looked fine, but I don’t really care about the gauntlet or harder difficulty. I was excited for the new story pack, but we didn’t get any new information on that.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - Why? Of all the characters to put together…Mario and the Rabbids. The gameplay itself doesn’t look bad, and actually pretty fun with the different tactics. I’m just going to use only the Mario characters to pretend it’s a Mario RPG.
Rocket League - Never played it, but I’ve always wanted to. I was already going to get it, but the cross play will secure it, as I can play with my friends who have it on Xbox or PC.
Super Mario Odyssey - Oh boy. Nintendo’s big dog, both company wise and E3 wise. What do I think about it? I think I need it now. The gameplay looks amazing, being able to possess different objects is such a smart idea, especially because Mario has such a large variety of enemies, and I also love the costumes. I mean, you can’t beat Sombrero Mario.
Metroid: Samus Returns - Another Metroid 2 Remake, but now official. The fan game of AM2R was taken down after its release, and now we know why. An official Metroid 2 remake. This is also crazy, as two Metroid games have been announced, and one is releasing this September. My hype is as big as the wait for these games were.
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions - It’s a remake of the first Mario and Luigi game, with a bonus mode. I really liked the original game, but not enough to buy a remake. The new mode also doesn’t really appeal to me. It looks fun and fine, but not my cup of tea.
Now, how did the first day at E3 match up to my wishlist?
Waluigi Game - I didn’t think it was gonna happen, and it didn’t. Not too disappointing.
Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon Information - This did surprise me, but the announcement of a core Switch game in development satiated me. Please be a Sinnoh remake…
A New Super Smash Bros Game - “It’s not gonna happen.” I called it, it was just what I wanted, not what I thought would happen.
A New Metroid - Yeah, I am very happy on that result, I got two new Metroid games
Animal Crossing for Switch - No news, but a Spring 2018 release date could happen, but that’s probably going to be the slot for Kirby or Yoshi.
Update on Nintendo Apps - This kind of surprised me, but E3 is for the big guns, which apps are not.
More Splatoon 2 Information - In the tournament we got to see new maps, so yeah, that was good enough for me.
Mother 3 - 12 years, many memes, one official tease, no news.
Virtual Console - Why didn’t Nintendo announce this? It would have been perfect to start the conference with this, and then say, “The Nintendo Switch Virtual Console will be available after the video event.” I also just want to play some SNES games on my Switch.
Now you may be thinking, “Didn’t you forget to talk about Pikmin 4?” Yeah, but so did Nintendo.
