Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: Donkey Kong Adventure Review
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was one of the most unexpected games for the Nintendo Switch, and the fact that it was so good was even more unexpected. It was a fun game, with engaging gameplay, and a great overall aesthetic. If you want to hear about the base game, check out my original review here. So, did the DLC improve on the base game, or was it unnecessary new part of the game?
Story
The story takes place after the first world in the main story. Rabbid Kong is getting put in the time travelling washing machine (don’t ask), and it malfunctions and sucks both him and Rabbid Peach to a tropical island. Rabbid Peach is surrounded by enemies, when Donkey Kong and Rabbid Cranky come to help her. They now have to work together to fix the washing machine and defeat Rabbid Kong.
Presentation
The Donkey Kong Adventure essentially adds a whole new world in addition to the four others from the main story. This is a much more tropical world, which is in line with the Donkey Kong Country games. The music is done again by the amazing Grant Kirkhope, and it manages to fit both the tropical aesthetic, as well as the Rabbids style.
Gameplay
The gameplay is obviously the same, with a large change for one character, Donkey Kong. Instead of having a dash attack, Donkey Kong is able to pick up enemies, allies, and even blocks. He can throw enemies and blocks to deal damage, or allies to get them farther away. Donkey Kong can also use specially marked spaces to travel across large spaces of the map. These two new abilities make a huge change towards how you have your team attack, considering you only have those three team members for the entire story.
Final Thoughts
Donkey Kong Adventure was a great DLC pack, with an exciting story, some great boss fights, and fun to use characters. However, you aren’t able to use these characters outside of the DLC, which is a missed opportunity for fun new versus matches. Either way, the DLC is a enjoyable, if not a bit short, but definitely worth the price tag.
